Rookies Club

Rookies Club is a teacher-led, athlete-supported sports program designed to help primary school teachers run after-school sport sessions while also creating an additional income stream. The model is built on familiarity and trust: kids engage because it’s their teachers leading the sessions, with fitness partners and sometimes well-known sports professionals stepping in to support delivery.

Visually, the brand direction pushed us into a vintage American baseball-inspired aesthetic, a space we don’t often work in, which made it a really interesting stretch creatively. The foundation was already set, so the challenge became how to evolve it into a full web experience without losing its edge. We leaned into rough textures, bold colour blocking, transparency overlays and an intentionally aged, gritty feel to reflect that classic sports programme energy. The palette of purply blues and deep reds helped ground the system while giving it contrast and personality, creating something that felt nostalgic but still contemporary.

Typography played a key role in holding everything together, with a condensed sans serif bringing structure, rhythm and legibility across a content-heavy system. The biggest challenge was balancing that expressive sports aesthetic with real functional clarity, especially when working with imagery in an Australian school context while maintaining the tone of the brand. In the end, it became a careful push and pull between storytelling and usability, ensuring the design supported the platform rather than overpowering it- one that stretched both the visual language and the way we approached systems-led design.
