Prepping for a Brand Photoshoot: What you need to know
You've decided to lock in a photoshoot for your brand - yay! We know it can be both super exciting exciting as well as a bit overwhelming. Nailing your shoot is one of the keys to capturing your brand’s visual essence.
In this blog, we'll break down the essential steps to ensure your photoshoot runs smoothly and results in standout visuals that truly represent your brand.
Initial Planning:
Firstly you will want to get all your ducks in a row.
Spend some time to select the right photographer for your brand - and remember you get what you pay for. Research and hire a professional photographer experienced in brand photography. Make sure to review their portfolio to ensure their style matches your brand aesthetic and they have what it takes to get this right for you.
We know we know that the rise of mobile phones have made everyone think they can take photos themselves now… Hate to tell you but it doesn't cut the mustard. Unless you have also studied photography and understand the nuances of how light and composition works- do yourself a favour and hire a professional.
Briefing your photographer:
Being clear with your photographer about what you need to cover for the day is essential. Photographers, like designers, are visual people, so the more you can share with them visually, the better. One key tool is a moodboard – it's absolutely necessary for nailing down colour palettes and the overall style you’re aiming for. By providing a visual reference, you help your photographer understand the exact vibe and aesthetic you want to achieve.
Additionally, make sure the photographer is familiar with your business culture and ethos. This understanding will enable them to capture on-brand shots that truly reflect your unique identity. The better they grasp your brand’s personality, the more aligned the final images will be in line with your business’ vision.
Ensure you choose a photographer who matches your design aesthetic, especially if you're not using your usual go-to professional. If you decide to go with someone new, share examples of previous images so they can gauge the shoot style. This way, they can seamlessly integrate the new photos with your existing visuals, maintaining a consistent and cohesive look for your brand.
Pre shoot day:
Getting your devices ready - if you are using laptops, ipads phones etc in the shoot - make sure these are all clean and ready to go.
Cleaning office areas - while it can be easy to say “we can photoshop that out later” the actual reality is that it is NOT. It is 100% worthwhile cleaning all rooms and surfaces you plan shooting in. Smudges on glass or screens, dust build up and dirty surfaces are not what you want to capture on the day.
Ensure you are shooting at the right time of day - if you’re shooting a project (this one is for architects, landscape designers and interior designers) make sure you shoot either early in the a.m or later in the p.m so you don't get harsh shadows through your shots.
Wardrobe - ensure your clothes are chosen for the day before the shoot so you are prepped. Choose outfits that visually match your brand aesthetic and will stand in line with your colour palette
Ensure you are shoot ready - whatever that means to you. Everyone is different when it comes to hair and makeup - but if you are investing in a shoot it can be 100% worth it to ensure you are going to look your best. This could mean simply putting in a bit of extra effort with your make up and a fresh hair cut or if you want the whole hog hiring a makeup artist, hair-dresser and stylist.
Plan out your time
Write a shoot list - really think about what kind of images would be helpful beyond grabbing headshots for your website. Chat with your designer - think about whether you need other photos along with the ones of you - also consider the location; what else would be handy for your website and or social media.
Don't rush - make sure you have lots of time.
Brief Your Team - Communicate the vision, goals, and schedule to everyone involved. Ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.
Hire a helper on the day - whether this is a current staff member or friend to help out throughout the day, I ALWAYS make sure I have one of these on hand.
On the shoot day:
Shoot direction - If you dont have an art director on set be sure to provide clear instructions to the photographer and any others involved in the shoot.
Ask for guidance when you need it: a good photographer will guide you through the shoot day but sometimes you might need to ask for a helping hand if you are unsure. Don't hesitate to ask the photographer for directions if need be, they are there to help.
Periodically review the photos throughout the day to ensure they meet your expectations.
Ensure the photos align with your brand vision and objectives and make adjustments as needed.
And most importantly, have fun! Taking a few hours out of your regular workday should be a fun and rewarding break.
By carefully planning and preparing for your photoshoot, you’ll capture stunning visuals that truly represent your brand. From selecting the right photographer to ensuring every detail aligns with your brand aesthetic, these steps will help you achieve standout results. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process!
