The 3 things you need to stop doing NOW to improve your branding
I’m going to throw something a little controversial out there and I’d love to know what you think of it…
Creating awesome business branding does not require intimate knowledge of said business.
What I’m trying to say is, there’s a MASSIVE difference between knowing every item on your product line and, how to eloquently articulate those products to appeal directly to the people who need them. This means, as the creator and owner of your business, you’re not necessarily the best person to create the best branding for your business.
Sometimes, when you’re too close to the inner workings of your business you’re not able to take an all-important step back to see your branding from another perspective. In fact, you might even be doing your branding a disservice. See, when it comes to developing a kick-ass brand identity for your biz, there’s a few things you need to stop doing NOW!! Sit back, imma walk you through them.
Stop bumbling blindly with your branding
It’s easy to get caught up in all the pretty fonts, pictures and colours out there. With so many wonderful options to choose from you can spend hours, or even days, sifting through inspiration for your branding. The problem is, when you’re making these choices with no clear definition of who your brand is and why you exist, you’re likely to end up with an inconsistent jumble of pretty things which don’t communicate how brilliant you are.
Stop forgetting who you’re doing this for
Although your eye may be drawn to cool, crisp colour schemes, is that what appeals to your audience? All too often business owners forget who’s buying their products or using their services and, that it’s them you should be making your decisions for. Without a defined understanding of who your target is you’re likely to end up with a brand designed by you, which appeals only to you!
Stop being bland
When you’re unsure about who your business is and the market it’s trying to serve, it’s easy to slip into a somewhat bland business personality. Without personality you have no clear tone of voice and nothing to differentiate you from your competition. See, most people are looking for a little fun and they want to get to know your business and what you stand for. It’s great to have fun with your customers because, more and more we’re seeing that professional ≠ boring.
The result of falling into a pattern of inconsistency, confusion and blandness is, this is what your audience sees and thus, forms their impression of you. In order to present a clear and consistent message to your customers, you need to know more than just what they can purchase from you. It’s all about who your target audience is and what problem you can solve for them.
Once you’ve nailed down who your target audience is, your business branding will no longer appeal to everyone. And, that’s a GREAT thing! Marketing your product or service directly to those who need them means you’ll find yourself with much more time to work on the things that truly benefit your business. Your audience will understand the benefits of your offering and they’ll know what your point of difference is, because your clever branding tells them!
If you find yourself falling into any, or all, of the categories I’ve listed above, fret not. I have just the thing you need!
